PRINCE
OF WALES MUSEUM - MUMBAI
Prince Of Wales Museum, between Colaba and Fort, was built to commemorate
King George V's first visit to India in 1905 while he was still Prince
of Wales, though it did not open till 1923. Designed by George Wittet
in Grand Indo-Saracenic style, it is set in an ornamental garden and
boasts an impressive galleried Central Hall topped by a huge dome,
said to have been inspired by the Golgumbaz in Bijapur. Its collection
includes artefacts from Elephanta Island and Jogeshwari caves, terracotta
figurines from the Indus Valley, ivory carvings, statues, and a huge
range of miniatures. The Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from
10.15 am to 6 pm. |
